The national championship dreams are gone. The thoughts of Joe Paterno winning a title as an 82-year old coach are finished. Collectively, this Penn State team failed miserably last weekend in a 24-23 loss to Iowa in the game’s final seconds.
But, it’s a new week and with two home games remaining on their schedule, the Nittany Lions can still win the Big Ten Championship and earn a trip to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
What better way to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss then to play the Big Ten’s worst team, the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers visit Beaver Stadium this Saturday following an embarrassing 55-20 loss to Wisconsin last weekend at home, dropping their record to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Even worse, Indiana’s quarterback situation is still up in the air. Quarterback Ben Chappell left the Wisconsin game with a head injury, and backup quarterback Kellen Lewis continues to suffer from a lingering ankle sprain.
For more on this weekend’s matchup, let’s take a closer look at the numbers:
601 - The Indiana defense allowed a startling 601 total yards to Wisconsin at home last weekend. The Badgers racked up 441 yards on the ground as running backs P.J. Hill, David Gilreath and John Clay all rushed for 100 or more yards. Look for Penn State to feature Evan Royster and Stephfon Green for most of the afternoon.
2.5 - Indiana’s offensive line has struggled this season allowing an average of 2.5 sacks per game, which ranks 100 th in the nation. Compare that to Penn State, who is allowing an average of 0.8 sacks per game, which ranks 5 th in the nation. The Hoosiers will find it difficult to stop a motivated Nittany Lion defensive line this Saturday.
126 - Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark has thrown for an average of 126 yards per game in his last three contests. Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa all limited Clark’s accuracy and drastically decreased his effectiveness. The Nittany Lions’ quarterback needs a big game to help his confidence and Indiana appears to be the perfect opponent.
Notes: Indiana has three 30-point losses in Big Ten play... Penn State is 11-0 all-time against the Hoosiers... Coach Joe Paterno has not sent a team to the Rose Bowl since 1994... Indiana junior defensive end Jammie Kirlew has been added to the Watch List for the 2008 Ted Hendricks Award, for the nation's top defensive end.... Penn State is listed as a 35-point favorite in Las Vegas for this Saturday’s game.
Prediction: Penn State 48 - Indiana 10
