Shoelaces and Hillman look to put on a show in the Big House
The 22 nd ranked Michigan Wolverines host the San Diego State Aztecs at noon eastern time Saturday. The game pits two teams that have looked impressive and have not been beaten this year.
On the year Michigan has wins over Western Michigan, Notre Dame, and Eastern Michigan. After an instant classic finish over Notre Dame in QB Dennard Robinson hit wideout Ray Roundtree to go up 35-31 with two seconds left in the game, the Wolverines handled Eastern Michigan 31-3 last Saturday.
The Aztecs, 3-0 for the first time since 1981, come into the game after defeating the Washington State Cougars 42-24 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, last Saturday. The undefeated Aztecs have used their experience on both sides of the ball to stay unblemished getting wins over Cal Poly and at a tough Army squad. SDSU is no stranger to top 25 competition. Last year they lost by a combined 12 points to three top 25 foes: Missouri, TCU, and Utah.
Michigan ’s dynamic junior QB Dennard “Shoelaces” Robinson comes into the game looking to make some more noise in early Heisman talk. After rushing for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns against Eastern Michigan he looks to put up some big numbers this weekend. On the year he has thrown for 531 yards, 202 yards to WR Junior Hemmingway, on 49 percent passing with 6 touchdown tosses. He also leads the team in rushing with 352 yards thus far. With Roundtree and Hemmingway posing deep threats, hard running RB Fitzgerald Touissant and explosive RB Vincent Smith add to playmaking ability of the Wolverine offense.
The Wolverines are not the only ones in this game that can put up some numbers offensively. Leading the Aztecs on offense senior QB Ryan Lindley is completing 53 percent of his passes covering 622 yards and 7 touchdown tosses. Success through the air is key to the Aztec offense, but their best playmaker has been sophomore RB Ronnie Hillman. Hillman has rushed for 497 yards that is 2 nd statistically in the country, with 8 touchdowns. He is averaging 166 yards a game and more impressively 6.5 yards a touch. Hillman definitely gives the Wolverine defense something to worry about and Lindley will give any team fits if they load the box.
The biggest headline in this game is Wolverine head coach Brady Hoke. Hoke was head coach of the Aztecs last year, and pleaded for this game to be scheduled. Now he will be on the other sidelines possible watching the greatest show of Saturday with Robinson and Hillman being the potential stars.
