Adam Weber: Assault on Minnesota Record Continues in 2009

The answer- More of the same. The Question? What to expect from University of Minnesota Quarterback Adam Weber. Barring injury, Weber should break every Minnesota passing record this season. He has been named to the preseason Manning Award watch list and he has all world wide receiver Eric Decker to throw to.

Weber enters the 2009 season ranked in the top five of every meaningful quarterback category in the Gopher record books. He ranks 4th in passing yardage, 4th in passing attempts, 2 nd in passing completions, 1st in completion percentage, and 4 th in career touchdown passes.

If Weber’s previous two seasons are indicative of his remaining time in Minneapolis, he will shatter all records that lie before him. Weber needs only 1,790 yards to pass Brian Cupito to become Minnesota’s all time passing yardage leader. He needs 86 passing attempts and 26 completions to surpass Cory Sauter’s career records. Weber is 13 touchdowns away from catching Brian Cupito’s all time record.

Helping Adam Weber’s cause this season is the return of his entire offensive line, the team’s leading rusher from last season- sophomore DeLeon Eskridge (678 yards, 7 touchdowns), and an arsenal of wide receivers. Decker (84 receptions, 1074 yards, 7 touchdowns), sophomore Brandon Green (21 receptions, 306 yards, 1 touchdown), senior Ben Kuznia (31 receptions, 310 yards), and senior tight end Nick Tow-Arnett (10 receptions, 211 yards, 1 touchdown) will all benefit from having a quarterback like Weber.

Joining the offensive fold will be sophomore kick off specialist Troy Stoudermire (25.8 yards per return) and junior college transfer Heyo Carpenter. Carpenter comes from the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA where he earned first team All American honors as a sophomore (93 receptions, 1,675 yards, and 16 touchdowns). Both have made major impacts in fall training camp and expect to be legitimate threats in the passing game this season.

The Weber/Decker connection has been lethal for two seasons now, however too often last season, opponents were able to game plan against Decker and take him out of games. This season Weber will be able to focus solely on the open receiver rather than forcing the ball to Eric Decker, making the Gophers much less predictable. Expect the offense to be extremely dangerous this season and expect Adam Weber to be on top of every University of Minnesota record.
