Carr retires, Michigan coaching rumors begin

 

University of Michigan head football coach Lloyd Carr officially announced his reitrement on Monday after a stellar career coaching the Wolverines. Carr went 121-40 over 13 seasons at Michigan including 5-7 in bowl games and 6-7 against rival Ohio State and won the 1997 AP National Championship. Carr announced his retirement recently leaving the door open for the Michigan football coaching rumors to begin. While media speculation has been centered around Les Miles at LSU who played under Bo Schembechler at Michigan, Lloyd Carr was quick to point out that Fielding Yost and Bo Schembechler were not "Michigan Men" originally.

Names rumored for Michigan's head coach position:

  • Les Miles - Currently the head coach at #1 LSU, Miles played at Michigan under Bo Schembechler and later worked as a assistant coach @ Michigan. Miles claimed he was not interested at a recent press conference, but Michigan asked for and was granted permission to talk to Miles following the SEC Championship game on December 1st. ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported that Miles will be named Michigan's new head coach in the coming week, however later that day Miles denied the report. LSU won the SEC Championship and leapfrogged from #7 to #2 in the BCS to play in the BCS National Championship and Miles appears to be staying @ LSU.
    • Speculation around Miles for the Michigan football coaching vacancy will not go away as Miles was reported on December 11th as to having been contacted by Michigan AD Bill Martin.
  • Mike Trgovac - An assistant for the NFL's Carolina Panthers, Trgovac was a graduate assistant coach @ Michigan in 1984.
  • Rich Rodriguez - ESPN's Jim Donnan mentioned Rodriguez on ESPNews on Monday because of his relation with now-Michigan head basketball coach John Beilein, who departed WVU for Michigan last year. Rodriguez claimed he was not interested at a recent press conference.
  • Kirk Ferentz - Current head coach at Iowa, his ties to Michigan come from Michigan's current President.
  • Bob Stoops - Current head coach at Oklahoma claimed he was not interested at a recent press conference.
  • Bobby Petrino - Current head coach for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.
  • Jon Gruden - Current head coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • Jim Harbaugh - Current head coac at Stanford played QB for Michigan and his father coached at Michigan. Harbaugh claimed he was not interested at a recent press conference and bashed Michigan's academic standards for football players earlier this season.
  • Brian Kelly - The current head coach at Cincinnati led the Central Michigan Chippewas to the 2006 MAC Championship and has strong ties in the state of Michigan.
  • Ron English - Michigan's defensive coordinator has reportedly already interviewed for the position.
  • Greg Schiano - The Rutgers head coach was contacted by Michigan and was reportedly going to receive an offer. But Schiano chose to remain at Rutgers before an official offer from Michigan was ever made.
  • John Cooper - Michigan was 10-2-1 when the former Ohio State football coach roamed the sidelines. Should the Wolverines check up on the ESPNU analyst?
